Mobile Ice Cream Truck Power System: Sweet Cow Moomobile Case Study

Sweet Cow, a beloved Colorado ice cream chain, runs a fleet of mobile trucks under the Moomobile name, bringing scooped ice cream, sundaes, and cake to weddings, graduations, and office events across the Front Range. When the inverter system on one of their trucks became unreliable and difficult to troubleshoot, Sweet Cow needed a mobile ice cream truck power system built to run every load reliably and make problems easy to understand. Trek Systems delivered a Victron-based lithium system with alternator charging and remote monitoring, giving Sweet Cow’s team clear visibility into their power and one less thing to worry about on event day.

Challenge

Mobile vending relies on an inverter and battery system to turn stored power into everything a truck needs to run a shift, from point-of-sale devices to lighting to small appliances. For an ice cream truck, that power system has to be dependable start to finish, since a single failure at an event means real customers standing in line with no way to pay, no lights inside the truck, and ice cream that won’t stay frozen for long.

Sweet Cow’s Moomobile truck ran on an aging lead-acid battery bank and inverter setup that had become unpredictable, failing or destabilizing mid-shift with no clear way to determine why. Even with an electrician involved, the team couldn’t easily tell whether an issue traced back to the inverter, the batteries, the charging system, or the load itself. Every failure risked disrupting service at live events like weddings and office gatherings, where the truck had one shot to perform, and a power outage was more than an inconvenience.

Solution

The Moomobile’s power system was built around three Victron Smart Lithium 12.8V 300Ah batteries wired into an 11.52kWh bank, replacing the truck’s lead-acid setup with a lithium battery bank that holds a charge more consistently through a full shift. A Victron Lynx Smart BMS 500 NG manages the battery bank, paired with a Lynx Distributor and Lynx Power In combiner to keep power distribution clean and protected.

A Victron Quattro 12/5000/220-100/100 Inverter/Charger handles the truck’s loads, running the POS system, tablets, cameras, interior lighting, a fudge warmer, and a water heater without the instability of the old setup. The Quattro’s second AC output is wired with a manual remote on/off switch, giving the crew the ability to power the truck’s cone dip warmer on and off with the flip of a switch instead of unplugging it between uses.

Since the truck has no solar array, charging comes from two sources: shore power when the truck is parked or in storage, and a Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A DC-DC charger that tops off the battery bank from the vehicle’s alternator while driving to and from events. The Cerbo GX paired with a GX Touch 50 display gives the crew an at-a-glance view of battery state and system health from inside the truck, while remote access through Victron’s VRM platform lets the team check in on the system remotely, whether they’re troubleshooting an issue or just confirming everything’s charged before a shift.

Since the system was commissioned in December 2025, the Moomobile truck has run through a full season of events, weddings, graduations, and office visits, without the unpredictable failures that plagued its old lead-acid setup. When a minor issue came up, it was traced and resolved quickly instead of leaving the crew guessing, a direct result of the visibility the Cerbo GX and VRM monitoring provide.

For Sweet Cow, the upgrade means fewer disruptions at events where the truck has one shot to perform, and more confidence in a system the team can actually understand. With clear diagnostics and dependable power now built into the Moomobile, the truck is set up to keep serving ice cream at full capacity, shift after shift.

Deployment

Victron Smart Lithium Batteries (LiFePO4)

Victron Smart Lithium Battery
  • Provide 11.52kWh of usable lithium capacity across three 12.8V 300Ah batteries, replacing the truck’s lead-acid bank with power that holds a consistent charge through a full event shift.

Victron Lynx Smart BMS 500 NG

Victron Lynx Smart BMS
  • Protects the lithium battery bank by monitoring voltage, current, and temperature, automatically disconnecting loads or chargers if a fault is detected to prevent damage to the batteries.

Victron Quattro 12/5000/220-100/100 Inverter/Charger

Victron Quattro Inverter/Charger
  • Runs the truck’s full electrical load, including the POS system, tablets, cameras, interior lighting, fudge warmer, and water heater.
  • Charges the battery bank from shore power when the truck is parked or in storage, and includes a manually switched second AC output that lets the crew power the cone dip warmer on and off without unplugging it.

Victron Orion XS 12/12-50A DC-DC Battery Charger

Victron Orion XS DC-DC Charger
  • Charges the battery bank from the vehicle’s alternator while driving to and from events, adding a second charge source alongside shore power.

Victron Cerbo GX MK2 + GX Touch 50

Victron Cerbo GX MK2 and GX Touch 50
  • Displays real-time battery state and system health inside the truck, and gives the crew remote access via Victron’s VRM platform to check in on the system or troubleshoot from anywhere.
